I was at lunch with co-workers when I received the dreaded call that there had been a fire in my home. Somehow I hoped for the best and thought maybe it was just something small and contained. Unfortunately that was not the case. It had gutted my office and the bedroom above it and whatever the fire didn’t destroy the smoke did. That was only the beginning of the agony. Next came trying to document everything I had lost for the insurance company. Needless to say there was no way to remember everything and we left alot off the list we submitted. Months later we would look for something and realize that we had lost it in the fire and forgot to get reimbursed for it from the insurance company. I had never heard of a home inventory other than the one you are supposed to do yourself and give to the insurance company when you first get homeowners insurance. A thorough inventory would have saved us so much time and frustration. You never think it will happen to you, I know I didnt, but it happens to just average people like you and me. All I can say is be prepared.
it took a team of 10 to help a friend go through the process after a house fire…a Home Inventory is a GREAT IDEA!! J. Schmidtt, Ohio
